Manchester United faced yet another setback as the side went on to lose by 2 goals at their own home to a relegated Cardiff. This loss meant that United finished their campaign at 6th place with 66 points.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored on either side of half time as a relegated Cardiff stunned the expectant crowd at Old Trafford to register a victory and end the season on a high.
The Cardiff midfielder took his side ahead in the 23rd minute as he sent David de Gea the wrong side to convert his spot kick. Mendez-Laing had himself earned the penalty after Diogo Dalot had fouled him inside the box.
In the second half, Mendez-Laing doubled the Bluebird’s lead after his left footed shot from inside the box found the back of the net. Josh Murphy claimed the assist for the cross he had provided.
United throughout the game enjoyed better statistics, taking a total of 26 shots with 10 of those in target. But the side could not convert their chances and had to end up on the losing side. Marcus Rashford had a good chance to get his side back into the game but his header was well kept out by Neil Etheridge.
Thus their recent blip in form sees them finish in 6th place with just 66 points this campaign. Solskjaer will have his task cut out to bring this United side back to its glory days.
United currently miss out on Champions League for the next season and will have to settle for the Europa League.
