Indian shuttling icons PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen have secured their berths into the second round of the ongoing Canada Open following their straight game victories in the respective opening round clashes in Calgary on Wednesday.

Seeded fourth, Sindhu dominated in her women’s singles opening outing against local star Talia NG on Wednesday night, registering a 21-16 21-9 win over the Canadian to reach the pre-quarterfinals, where the two time Olympic medallist will take on Natsuki Nidaira of Japan.

Sen, on the other hand, faced a much tougher challenger in Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn, and battled hard against the second seeded player to end up with a close 21-18 21-15 win. His men’s singles pre-qf will be played against Brazil’s Ygor Coelho, who dropped the curtains on B Sai Praneeth’s campaign with a 21-12, 21-17 win in the opener.

Ruthvika Shivani Gadde also bowed out from the women’s singles first round, losing to Supanida Katethong of Thailand 12-21 3-21. In the men’s doubles event, Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Goud Panjala will be in action against Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan, the Indonesian pair who are seeded second.
