BWF World Tour Finals : Top Korean star out on day 1

The Day 1 of the BWF World Tour Finals 2023 saw a couple of shocking exits. The World No.1’s in Men’s Singles, Viktor Axelsen (former winner) of Denmark and Women’s Singles, Se-young of South Korea have suffered shock defeats.

In 2021, then teenager from South Korea, Se-Young defeated the top seeded Carolina Marin and PV Sindhu in semi final and final to win her first title.

This is the first time since 2010 that no Indian athlete made the cut. Previously, PV Sindhu won the year end title in 2018 after dominating the tournament. Also, The former World No.1 Kidambi Srikanth, who was the first Men’s Singles player to reach the World Championships and HS Prannoy also made the cut.

What is BWF World Tour Finals?

The BWF World Tour Finals(previously BWF Super Series Finals from 2008-2017) is in its sixth edition, conducted at the end of every calendar year among the top eight players/pairs in in the BWF World Tour Standing, with a maximum of two players/pairs from the same member association. The event will have five categories comprising Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles.

India at the BWF World Tour Final 2023

This year, India’s top The top doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty (World Doubles rank 2) were expected to make the cut. However, the Tour follows a different approach in allotting the rankings for qualification. The World rankings consider the 10 best tournaments. However, the Tour considers points from 14 tournaments. This puts the Indian pair at a rank of 10.
