Saina Nehwal saw her BWF World Championships coming to an end after she went down 17-21, 21-16, 13-21 against Busanan Ongbamrungphan in the third round of the event at the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium on Thursday.
The Olympic bronze medallist had a shoulder-to-shoulder contest against her Thai rival and came back brilliantly in the second game but Busanan was able to edge out in the decider, making her head to head record against Saina 5-3.
Meanwhile, India saw great progress in the men’s doubles department, as the two pairs of Dhruv Kapila-MR Arjun and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty earned their respective quarterfinal berths.
The unseeded duo of Kapila and Arjun, who had earlier ousted Denmark’s Kim Astrup and Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, came from behind to earn a hard fought win over Terry Hee and Loh Kean Hean, defeating the Singaporean pair 18-21 21-15 21-16 in 58 minutes. The Satwik-Chirag duo made easy work of Jeppa Bay and Lasse Molhede of Denmark to a comfortable 21-12 21-10 margin in 35 minutes.
