India scripted history to win their maiden BWF Thomas Cup title after defeating the 14-time winners, Indonesia on Sunday at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand. In the opening contest, Lakshya Sen handed a defeat to Anthony Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 to give India a 1-0 lead. While, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty registered a come-from-behind win in first doubles to win 18-21, 23-21, 21-19 against Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo to give India a 2-0 lead. In the second singles match, Kidambi Srikanth emerged victorious against Jonatan Christie 21-15, 23-21 to seal the history-making triumph for India.

In the first clash, after losing the first set 8-21, Sen made a remarkable comeback in the second game, before also shrugging off a four-point deficit in the third game. Sen then went on to defeat Ginting 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 in a match that lasted for an hour and five minutes. Ginting took the first game 21-8 before Sen edged him in the second by 21-7.

The doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty then saved four match points in the second game to eventually defeat Mohammad Ahsan and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo 18-21 23-21 21-19.

In the second singles, Srikanth outworked Asian Games gold medallist Jonatan Christie 21-15 23-21 in 48 minutes to seal the contest.

No Indian team has previously reached the final of the Thomas and Uber Cup in its 70-plus year history. Indian men reached the Thomas Cup semi-finals in 1952, 1955 and 1979 while the women’s team made it to the Uber Cup top-four in 2014 and 2016.
