The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has elontaed its current ban on ‘spin serve’ and has made the decision to keep it in effect until after the conclusion of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
The sport’s governing body put a temporary ban on the serve style- in which the player spins the shuttlecock before launching it which caused difficulty for the opponent, with effect from May.
And on Monday, it announced that they will be extending the ban till the Olympics next year.
“After consultation with the badminton community, BWF Council believed it best to forbid the ‘spin serve’ for another 15 months so as to not impact the Olympic and Paralympic qualifying periods and the Games themselves,” read an official statement from BWF.
Furthermore, the ruling will be in effect at the upcoming Thailand Open commencing this Saturday, the body added.
BWF Secretary General Thomas Lund had initially welcomed the spin serve, addressing it as an “innovation” but was also skeptical and called for “more evidence was needed on the potential effects” of it before a full scale introduction.
Badminton Association of Malaysia secretary-general Kenny Goh, who earlier had termed the spin serve as something that could “kill” the game, has thumbed up the decision of the BWF. He had told AFP that the spin serve would create “an irregular flight, so sometimes the feather would go in front instead.”
