Lasith Malinga, an inevitable pillar of the Mumbai Indians squad decided to pull out of the 2020 Indian Premier League season. The absence of the veteran stalwart speedster was a massive jab for the defending champions before the start of the 13th edition of IPL. However, icon Brett Lee has the perfect replacement in mind, as the former Aussie bowling icon names Jasprit Bumrah to ‘fill the shoes’ of Malinga in UAE.
Due to the illness of his father, Lasith Malinga made the choice not to join up with his Mumbai Indians contingent and flew back to Sri Lanka. Rohit Sharma, the skipper of the four-time IPL champions, stated that it would be a tough job to find someone who can take the place of the 37-year-old pacer.
However, Brett Lee comes with a solution, as he names Jasprit Bumrah to be the perfect replacement for Malinga in IPL 2020.
He can fill those shoes: Brett Lee hails Jasprit Bumrah as Malinga’s yorker proxy
Team India superstar Jasprit Bumrah has been revered as one of the greatest bowlers in the current generation. He has been a part of the Mumbai Indians franchise since 2013 and has picked up 82 wickets in 77 IPL matches, with a commendable 7.55 average economy rate.
Speaking on Star Sports’ ‘Game Plan’ show, Brett Lee had no doubts to name Bumrah as the perfect substitute for Malinga.
“I am always Bumrah’s fan since he burst onto the scene some years ago,” Lee said on the show, “He has got a different bowling action, he pushes the ball in, and can swing the ball both ways.
“He is good with the new ball but I like him with the old ball and that’s why he can fill the shoes of Malinga and can bowl at death overs.”
“He can bowl at 140kmph and zoom the ball in at the batsman’s feet. He is bowling the yorkers consistently and there are very less bowlers like that, so he can fill those shoes,” the former Aussie international added.
Mumbai Indians will take on Chennai Super Kings in the inaugural IPL 2020 match today at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.
