The International Olympic Committee Session concluded a meeting on Tuesday wherein they approved the listings of breaking, sport climbing, surfing, and skateboarding as provisional sports for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
These sports are aimed at making the Olympics ‘more urban’ and ‘more artistic’. The official confirmation to make these sports as medal sports can be confirmed in December 2020.
“I am delighted with the IOC session’s decision vote in favour of our proposal. Our role is to enrich the Olympic program with new sports to reach new audiences especially the youth,” said the head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee Tony Estanguet.
Breaking was a hit at the 2018 Youth Games where it was introduced in Buenos Aires. Although it will be surfing’s maiden entry in any sort of Olympics, it is expected to be a hit amongst the masses.
“Surfing combines high-performance action with a connection to the environment, sustainability and self-improvement. Surfing aligns perfectly with Paris 2024 and the Olympic values and we’re proud to have the chance to continue our journey with the IOC.”
