2036 Olympics

The 2024 Paris Olympics promise an exciting blend of tradition and innovation. Alongside established events like gymnastics, basketball, and soccer, four new sports will take centre stage. Let’s dive into what these fresh additions bring to the Olympic arena.

New Games at the Paris Olympics

Breakdancing (Breaking):

After captivating the hip-hop world for decades, breakdancing (referred to as “Breaking” by the IOC) will make its Olympic debut in Paris. Previously featured at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Breaking has now earned its place on the grand Olympic stage.

The competition will feature two events each for men and women, where 16 competitors will showcase their skills in “spectacular solo battles.” Athletes will use a combination of moves, including windmills, 6-step, and freezes, to improvise their choreography to a DJ’s tracks.

The goal? To wow the judges and bring home the first Breaking medals in Olympic history. The competition spans two days: women compete on August 9, followed by the men on the next day. Rounds include round-robin, quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, all happening on the same day.

Sport Climbing:

Sport climbing returns for a second consecutive Olympics. This indoor rock-climbing competition features three distinct events: Athletes scale a 49-foot wall in six minutes without having seen the route beforehand. The complexity and challenge increase during the event.

One-on-one elimination rounds involve scaling the same wall with holds that make reaching the top progressively difficult. Climbs occur in seconds. Athletes tackle a 13-foot wall without safety ropes. The goal is to scale it quickly with the fewest attempts.

Sport climbing’s popularity led to its inclusion after debuting at the Buenos Aires Summer Youth Olympic Games.

Skateboarding:

Skateboarding made its debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and continues in Paris. Athletes perform tricks and manoeuvres on ramps, rails, and other obstacles. The sport brings an urban, street-style vibe to the Olympic stage.

Surfing:

Riding the waves, surfing also debuted in Tokyo and returns to Paris. Surfers showcase their skills on the ocean, combining athleticism and artistry. The waves of Tahiti will provide the stunning backdrop for this exhilarating event.

These new sports reflect the Olympic spirit of inclusivity, innovation, and pushing boundaries. Whether it’s breakdancing, climbing, skateboarding, or surfing, athletes from around the world will inspire us with their passion and dedication. The 2024 Paris Olympics promise a thrilling celebration of athleticism and creativity.
