Boxing Day Test feared as COVID hotspot as one spectators tests positive

The much-anticipated four-match Test series between India and Australia has become a surprising one when Team India bounced back well in the Boxing Day Test and levelled the series by 1-1. However, it took the limelight away when a fan, who attended the Test at the MCG, has tested positive for the global pandemic novel COVID-19, and authorities there have asked other fans to get tested and isolate if they were nearby to that person.

As per the report in ‘The Telegraph’, the state health authorities have said that the man in his thirties was not infectious while he was at the famous Melbourne Cricket Ground on the second day of the game “but there is potential he acquired the virus while there” or at a nearby shopping centre as well.

“The MCG is being investigated as a potential source for the infection,” Victoria’s Department of Health was quoted as saying in the report. “We’re encouraging anyone who was in The Great Southern Stand, zone 5 of the MCG between 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm on 27 December, to get tested and isolate until they receive a negative result.”

India registered a convincing win in the second Test at the MCG where near to 30,000 people were attended in the live-action between the two of the best sides in the world cricket. However, there was controversy after the match when the news came that five Indian players were alleged breached the COVID-19 protocols by eating outside at an indoor restaurant in Melbourne as well. However, the Indian players have returned negative COVID tests before they flew to Sydney for the third Test, which is starting from Thursday (January 7) onwards.

Meanwhile, a few changes are awaiting for the third game where Rohit Sharma will be seen in the top of the order as well. Even, the place for Team India’s third pace bowler has become a much-needed debate where the new speedster T Natarajan got the chance. Notably, T Natarajan was a net bowler earlier but he was named as a replacement to injured Umesh Yadav. However, this happened after Shardul Thakur, who was also named as a net bowler, was added in the Test team as a replacement to pace spearhead Mohammad Shami as well.
