Boris Thangjam, U17 WC player becomes first active footballer to be COVID-19 positive

Boris Thangjam, who represented India at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup has become the first active Indian footballer to test positive for COVID-19, and is currently under quarantine in Manipur.

A youth product of the AIFF Elite Academy, Boris Thangjam was selected to be a part of the national squad at the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup hosted in India, where the right back made two appearances.

In the same year, Boris joined the I-League side Indian Arrows under the coaching of Portuguese gaffer Luis Norton de Matos. He made his first appearance for the club against Chennai City, and also scored on his debut.

Over two seasons, he made a total of 31 appearances for Arrows, scoring twice. Boris scored his second goal for the club against NEROCA Football Club in February 2019. In 2018, Boris was selected for the U20 Indian squad at the COTIF tournament in Spain, where they defeated Argentina 2-1.

“Boris has tested positive for COVID-19, his name has come in the latest list of those who has tested positive. He will be under quarantine,” a close relative of the 20 year old defender told PTI on Thursday.

Boris Thangjam was also part of the U-16 team at the AFC U-16 Championship which was hosted in India back in 2016, and scored in the opening match against United Arab Emirates.

Following a loan spell during his stint with the Arrows, Boris made a permanent switch to Indian Super League side ATK Mohun Bagan, where he made two appearances so far.

A talented right back who is quick on his feet, Boris hails from Imphal, the capital of Manipur, which has seen over 4,800 positive cases till date.
