Celebrated Indian Weightlifter from Manipur, Bindyarani Devi, has etched her name in the annals of Indian sports history. She secured a historic bronze medal in the women’s 55kg event at the prestigious International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Cup. This achievement marks the first time an Indian has won a medal at the IWF World Cup.
Devi lifted an impressive total of 196kg, comprising 83kg in the snatch and 113kg in the clean and jerk categories. Her performance in the clean and jerk category also earned her a silver medal. Despite facing formidable opponents, including North Korea’s Kang Hyon Gyong, who clinched the gold medal with a staggering total lift of 234kg, and Romania’s Mihaela Cambei, who secured the silver medal with a personal best effort of 201kg, Devi’s determination and skill shone through.
However, Devi’s path to victory was not without its share of challenges. She managed to secure only three legal lifts out of six attempts, resulting in a total lift that fell short of her previous accomplishments. Nonetheless, her bronze medal triumph highlights her sheer dedication and passion that she has for the sport.
Bindyarani Devi’s achievement is particularly noteworthy considering the stiff competition she faced. Her competitors included seasoned athletes and emerging talents from around the world. Yet, Devi’s performance stood out, demonstrating her exceptional talent and the result of years of rigorous training.
This historic win is not just a personal victory for Bindyarani Devi, but also a significant milestone for Indian weightlifting.
