Team India bowling coach Bharat Arun, who will undertake his final assignment in the final group contest against Namibia, feels that the Men In Blue would have benefitted from a small break after the culmination of the second leg of the IPL.
India failed to make it to the knockouts of an ICC event for the first time since the 2012 T20 World Cup. New Zealand’s victory over Afghanistan meant that India fell two points short of a place in the semi-finals. The team received a nine-day break between the IPL final and their first group encounter between Pakistan. Bowling coach Bharat Arun said:
“Being on the road for six months is a huge ask. Players haven’t gone home and I think they had a short break after the last IPL got suspended (in May)”
“They have been in a bubble for six months and that takes a huge toll, so specific to your question, may be a short break between IPL and World Cup could have done a lot of good for these boys,”
India will next be seen in action against the visiting New Zealand side in a 3 match T20I series and will also play 2 Tests as part of the World Test Championship. The senior players are slated to be rested for the white-balls series with KL Rahul touted to lead the side.
Toss gives unfair advantage: Bharat Arun
Arun added that the tournament in the UAE made the toss highly relevant and he believes that should not be the case. He felt that the teams batting second had a significant advantage, and the records reflect the same as well. Virat Kohli lost the toss in India’s first three matches, out of which India lost two. Arun added:
“Toss played a very, very vital role and I believe in these kind of matches, toss shouldn’t be of any consequence,” he said.
“Here toss gives unfair advantage and there is a huge change in batting in the first innings and batting in the second innings. That shouldn’t be the case in a short format like this,”
Bharat Arun is likely to be replaced by Paras Mhambrey as the bowling coach of the Indian team after the culmination of the T20 World Cup.
