Australia’s cricketing landscape is adorned with iconic rivalries, and among them, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) stands tall. As the Indian cricket team prepares to visit Australia in November 2024, the anticipation surrounding this five-match Test series is palpable. For Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, the BGT holds a special place—it is on par with the revered Ashes series.

The BGT has evolved into a fierce battle between India and Australia over the past two decades. Unlike the Ashes, which pits England against Australia, the BGT represents a clash of cricketing giants from the subcontinent and Down Under.

Mitchell Starc is confident of clinching BGT at home

With the upcoming BGT spanning five Tests, it now rivals the Ashes in terms of duration and intensity. Starc acknowledges this shift, emphasizing that every match matters. Australia’s desire to reclaim the trophy after a decade adds to the stakes.

“Being five matches now it’s probably right on par with an Ashes series. We always want to win every game at home and we know India are a very strong team,” Starc said.

Both India and Australia currently occupy the top spots in the World Test Championship points table. Their likely meeting in the final, scheduled for 2025 at Lord’s, adds further intrigue. While India has reached two WTC finals, they are yet to clinch the title.

“As we’re placed at the minute we’re the top two teams on the Test ladder… so a very exciting series coming up for the fans and certainly the players,” Starc said.

The BGT has witnessed India’s dominance in recent years. Under the leadership of Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, and Rohit Sharma, India has outplayed Australia. In the last BGT hosted in India (2023), India secured a 3-1 victory, propelling them to the WTC final.

Starc expresses hope that when the dust settles on January 8, Australia will have the coveted trophy back on its shores. His words resonate with fans who eagerly await this high-stakes contest.

“Hopefully when we’re sitting there on the 8th of January we have that trophy back on our shores,” Starc further added.

As the India vs. Australia Test series unfolds, cricket enthusiasts worldwide will witness a clash of titans—a battle where national pride, skill, and resilience collide. Whether the Border-Gavaskar Trophy remains in India’s grasp or returns to Australian soil, one thing is certain: the spirit of competition will burn brightly, akin to the legendary Ashes rivalry.
