The Basketball Federation of India (BFI) has ushered in a new era for the Indian men’s basketball team by appointing Scott Flemming as the head coach. This marks Flemming’s second stint with the team, having previously served as head coach from 2012 to 2015.

Scott Flemming, an American coach, brings with him a wealth of experience, boasting a coaching career spanning 38 years. He was named the NAIA National Coach of the Year in 1997-98 and the NCCAA National Coach of the Year in 1999-2000. His impressive portfolio and leadership skills are expected to be instrumental in elevating the performance of the Indian team.

Scott Flemming’s previous tenure with India

During his previous tenure with the Indian team, Flemming led the team to several notable victories. The team defeated China for the first time in the FIBA Asia Cup 2014 and won the gold medal in the 2014 Lusofonia Games held in Goa. Under his guidance, India also clinched gold medals at the South Asian Championship in 2014.

Apart from coaching the senior men’s team, Flemming has also conducted training camps for India’s Under-14, Under-16, and Under-18 national teams. He has served as the head coach and the technical director at the NBA Academy India, further solidifying his connection with Indian basketball.

Flemming’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the Indian team. The team recently suffered a 53-86 defeat in an intense Group E clash of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers. Currently ranked 82 in the FIBA Rankings, India will be facing Iran and Kazakhstan in the Group E qualifiers in November. With Flemming at the helm, fans are hopeful that the team will reach greater heights.
