The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that it will hold a Special General Meeting (SGM) on January 12, 2025, to elect a new secretary and treasurer. This decision follows the recent resignations of Jay Shah and Ashish Shelar from their respective positions.

Shah, who served as the BCCI secretary since 2019, has taken over as the youngest chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) as of December 1, 2024. Shelar, a seasoned BJP politician, has been sworn in as a cabinet minister in the newly formed Maharashtra government.

Who would be the next BCCI Secretary?

The BCCI constitution mandates that any vacant post must be filled within 45 days by calling a Special General Meeting. The upcoming SGM will be held within 43 days of the deadline, ensuring compliance with this requirement. The meeting will take place at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai, where state units have been notified about the date following the Apex Council Meeting on Thursday.

The election process will be overseen by Achal Kumar Jyoti, the former Chief Election Commissioner of India, who has been appointed as the Electoral Officer. Jyoti, a retired 1975 batch Gujarat cadre IAS officer, served as India’s chief election commissioner from July 2017 to January 2018.

Currently, Devajit Saikia from Assam is performing the duties of the BCCI’s interim secretary, while the treasurer’s position remains vacant. The choice of both the new secretary and treasurer is expected to be a unanimous decision. Among the speculated candidates for the secretary position are Rohan Jaitley, the president of the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA), and Anil Patel, the secretary of the Gujarat Cricket Association.

The upcoming SGM is a significant event for the BCCI as it seeks to fill these crucial positions and continue its operations smoothly. The new appointments will play a vital role in shaping the future of Indian cricket, ensuring that the board remains effective and efficient in its governance and administration.
