The BCCI will initiate the process to appoint the coaching staff for the Indian cricket team before the culmination of the 2021 T20 World Cup itself. Reports heavily suggest that Ravi Shastri is not likely to continue as the head coach of the team.
Apart from Shastri, the contracts of the rest of the coaching staff like bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach Bharat Arun will end after the T20 World Cup. The board plans to find suitable suitors for the vacant roles by the time New Zealand tours India. This ensures the new coaching staff is well integrated into the system well before the crucial tour to South Africa later this year.
The BCCI have reportedly already approached Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman for the position of head coach of the team. Moreover, Tom Moody is said to be another name who is said to be interested in the role. Kumble’s past while holding the position as the head coach and his record with the Punjab Kings works against him.
The board is keen to explore more names and then finalize handing over the reins. A top BCCI was quoted as saying to BCCI:
“The process of hiring the next support staff will start this week. The board is looking at October 14 to come out with the advertisement. The board is keen to bring in the new coach during the New Zealand series so that he gets used to the dressing room before the team leaves for South Africa in the second week of December,”
“These are very early stages. There could be more big names applying for the job. The board will wait for to see who all apply and then decide on pursuing individuals,” the official added.
As far as the role of the bowling coach is concerned, the current NCA bowling coach Paras Mhambre is in the running. The former India bowler has worked closely with Rahul Dravid and has been groomed to undertake the bigger assignment as well. The official said:
“It will be great if Mhambrey applies for the job. He knows the system well. But the board will have to figure out who will take care of the U-19 team because there is not much time to prepare or the U-19 World Cup,”
India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign on October 24 with a match-up against their arch-rivals Pakistan. Apart from it being Shastri’s final assignment with the team, it also marks Virat Kohli’s final set of matches as the T20 captain.
