Ravi Shastri’s historic stint with the Indian team will seemingly come to an end after the end of the T20 World Cup. As a result, the board will soon look to rope in a new candidate to coach the Indian side, and reports suggest that they prefer an Indian candidate to take over.

The board reportedly asked Rahul Dravid, who had coached the second-string Indian team during their tour of Sri Lanka, to succeed Ravi Shastri. However, the former India captain has respectfully declined the opportunity and still prefers to work with youngsters over at the NCA.

A number of high-profile overseas coaches, who have made their name in the IPL and other franchises like Mahela Jayawardene and Ricky Ponting are also considered as other options if they are unable to get an Indian coach.

Sourav Ganguly is keen on the idea of bringing former coach Anil Kumble back into the mainframe. The former leg-spinner, however, does not share the same vision and is not open to the idea of returning back to the job he left in 2017 after a reported rift with Virat Kohli.

“We have had conversations with leading Indian players. Although their suggestions are not binding, there is no point in creating a potential disturbance in the dressing room,

Apart from Shastri, the board are looking for potential suitors to fill in the void created after the departure of bowling and fielding coaches Bharat Arun and R Sridhar respectively.

The upcoming T20 World Cup poses as the final assignment for the coaching staff under which the Indian team had one of its best eras in history.
