The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has lodged a strong objection with the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding Pakistan’s plan to host the Champions Trophy tour in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (POK). This move by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has led to the ICC putting the promotional event on hold.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is scheduled to be held in Pakistan, and the PCB announced plans to take the trophy on a tour of various cities, including Skardu, Hunza, and Muzaffarabad, which fall under the disputed territory of POK. This announcement was made without prior consultation with all stakeholders, prompting the BCCI to raise concerns.
BCCI’s Objection against Champions Trophy Tour
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah contacted the ICC top brass and condemned the PCB’s move, urging the global body to take strong action. The BCCI emphasized that while there is no issue with the trophy tour in Islamabad, it cannot be extended to POK.
ICC’s Response
In response to the BCCI’s objection, the ICC has put the Champions Trophy tour on hold. An ICC Board Member stated that the discussions on the trophy tour are ongoing, and the global body will not allow the trophy to be taken to any disputed region.
The controversy has added complexity to the already uncertain status of the Champions Trophy 2025. The BCCI has previously refused to send its team to Pakistan for the tournament, and the PCB has rejected the proposed ‘Hybrid Model’ with India playing its matches in Dubai. The schedule for the tournament has been put on hold, and the latest controversy could further complicate matters.
