The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) has made several amends to the current set of rules ahead of the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League. The introduction of multiple reviews, MCC guidelines, and points distribution in the case of a COVID outbreak have all been addressed.

In line with the volatile health and safety situation, teams will now lose points if they are unable to field a playing XI following a COVID outbreak and if rescheduling is not an option.

According to the BCCI: “Unable to field a team on account of COVID for any match due to having less than 12 players available in the playing XI (of which at least 7 must be Indian) plus 1 substitute fielder.

“The BCCI, at its discretion, will attempt to reschedule the match for later in the season. If this is not possible, the issue will be referred to the IPL Technical Committee. The decision of the IPL Technical Committee will be final and binding.”

The new rule comes on the back of the COVID outbreak in the first leg of the IPL 2021. The tournament had to be suspended midway, with the second half of the tournament being staged in the UAE after several months.

The BCCI have also decided to increase the number of reviews from one to two per innings. Moreover, the latest MCC rule, which states that the incoming batter following a dismissal will take the strike irrespective of whether the previous two batters crossed the pitch or not, will also be implemented in the IPL 2022.

“Upon a catch dismissal, irrespective of whether the batsmen have crossed or not the incoming batsman will take the strike, except if it’s the last ball of the over,”

The 15th edition of the Indian Premier League is slated to begin on March 26. Defending champions Chennai Super Kings will take on the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
