The Women’s IPL(WIPL) was one of the agendas at GC meeting on Friday and the board had proposed a six-team Women’s IPL. It seems that the full-fledged women’s tournament will commence in 2023. BCCI had been planning to conduct the Women’s IPL but the discussions were delayed due to the pandemic. But now the board has given green light to conduct the tournament from the next year. This year again the exhibition matches would be conducted. The women’s matches couldn’t be staged in 2021 due to COVID-19 outbreak.
Many women cricketers have backed the idea of conducting a full-fledged IPL and the league is likely to kick off next year. The tournament will be a six-team event.
The England Cricket Board and Cricket Australia have a full-fledged league for women cricketers. The Indian women cricketers have been part of CA’s Women’s Big Bash League and ECB’s The Hundred.
“The full-fledged women’s IPL has to be approved by the AGM. We plan to start it by next year hopefully,” BCCI president Sourav Ganguly told media after IPL GC meeting in Mumbai on Friday.
eanwhile, the BCCI has finally given the green light for IPL Media Rights tender to be released. As reported by InsideSport, the BCCI was ready to release the IPL Media Rights. The decision comes five months late and the Indian board announced that it would release the IPL Media Rights tender by October 25 but it kept on delaying the process. Now, the ITT will be released on Monday.
