India were faced with a daunting target of 328 on a Day 5 pitch at the Gabba, a venue where Australia have not lost a test match in 32 years.
The visitors set the tone for the chase early on by denying Australia a flurry of series in the first session. Having lost only a single wicket till lunch, India slowly switched gears keeping an eye on the required rate and preserving wickets at the same time.
The approach remained the same until Cummins with the new ball proved to be too hot to handle for the batting-unit. While it seemed that the clash will head for a draw, Washington Sundar aided Pant with a vital cameo. The wicket-keeper batsman, pushed India over the line with a couple of overs to spare and deservedly win the man of the match award. Pat Cummins was awarded the man of the series for scalping 21 wickets in the series.
