BCCI Announce India Women’s Squad for South Africa Series

The BCCI has announced the squad for India women’s team for the upcoming series against South Africa women at home. Five ODIs and three T20Is will be played between two teams at the Bharat Ratna Shree Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana International Stadium in Lucknow.

The team has seen as many as six new faces. Baroda’s left-handed batter Yastika Bhatia and Mumbai’s keeper-batter Sweta Verma have earned maiden call-ups to the team alongside others. Apart from them, uncapped all-rounder Challuru Prathyusha and left-arm pacer Monica Patel have also been added to the side as well.

The 18-member squad also witness the return of keeper-batter Sushma Verma, who last played for India in an ODI in 2018 and a T20I in 2016 as well. Alongside her, pace bowler Mansi Joshi has also returned. Alongside Verma, Nuzhat Parveen has been added as the second ‘keeper on the T20I squad.

However, Shikha Pandey, India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the last year’s T20 World Cup in Australia has been dropped from both squads. Alongside her, veteran spinner Ekta Bisht too has been left out. First choice wicketkeeper-batter for the last few years, Taniya Bhatia and middle-order batter Veda Krishnamurthy too left out from both the ODI and T20I squads.

It is also noteworthy that, rookie batter Ayushi Soni, Prathyusha and Simran Dil Bahadur have been included in the T20I squad, which will be led by none other than Harmanpreet Kaur. And, Smriti Mandhana will be her deputy. Mithali Rak will lead the team in the ODI format.

The five-match ODI series will begin on March 7 whereas the three T20Is will be played on 20, 21 and 23 March respectively at the same venue.
