The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has recently taken a significant step to end the “star culture” within the Indian cricket team by issuing a 10-point directive aimed at promoting discipline and unity. This decision comes in the wake of India’s disappointing performances in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia, which resulted in the team missing out on a place in the World Test Championship final. The new measures were formulated in consultation with head coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, and chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar.
Will Gautam Gambhir produce results with the new directives?
The 10-point directive includes several key changes. Firstly, playing domestic cricket has been made mandatory for all players to remain eligible for selection in the national team and central contracts. Additionally, players are required to travel with the team during matches and training sessions, with exceptions needing pre-approval from the head coach and chairman of selectors. The directive also imposes strict baggage limits and restricts the inclusion of personal staff, such as managers and chefs, during tours.
Another significant aspect of the directive is the ban on individual commercial endorsements during ongoing series, ensuring that players remain focused on the game. Furthermore, players are expected to attend the full duration of practice sessions and not leave early, even if they are injured or advised to rest by medical staff. The directive also allows for family visits during overseas tours exceeding 45 days, with the BCCI covering shared accommodation for the visitors.

These measures are aimed at fostering a strong work ethic, maintaining match fitness, and strengthening the overall domestic cricket structure. The BCCI has emphasized that non-compliance with the directive will result in disciplinary action, including financial penalties and potential exclusion from BCCI-conducted tournaments.
Overall, the BCCI’s 10-point directive represents a comprehensive effort to instil discipline and unity within the Indian cricket team, ensuring that all players adhere to professional standards and contribute to the team’s success.
