Ousmane Dembele returned to first team training after missing out on two weeks of action due to an ankle injury and tonsillitis. The attacker suffered an ankle sprain in a match against Leganes which Barca won 3-1 and has been absent ever since. His return to first team training almost certainly means that he will be available for Wednesday’s Copa Del Rey clash against Real Madrid.
Despite the good news, Barcelona still have a massive headache heading into the El Classico. Lionel Messi was not to be seen in training on Monday. With the extent of the Argentine’s injury still in the dark, this could be cause for great concern for the Catalans. Messi has been instrumental in Barcelona’s table topping season, as he has been for the past decade, and missing him for a long time at this stage in the season might very well disrupt Barca’s progression in the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League. Messi has notched up 21 goals and 10 assists in 20 Catalans to the top games for his club this season in the La Liga, propelling the Catalans to the top of the league, favourites to win the title for the second successive season.
However, Barcelona have beaten Real comprehensively at the beginning of the season without the Argentine, with a margin of 5 goals to 1, so the Galacticos will still be considered to be the underdogs and will have an uphill battle to get a win out of the fixture.
