33 year old Luka Modric won the prestigious and coveted Ballon d’Or this week, breaking the Ronaldo-Messi duopoly as he helped Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League, guided the Croatian national team to the World Cup finals and shone spectacularly last season overall. The Croatian midfielder has now revealed his retirement plans.

After he revealed how Arsene Wenger impacted his Ballon d’Or success Modric, who was also named FIFA’s Best Men’s Player earlier this year, has decided what his final destination will be ahead. The Real Madrid star hopes to hang his boots in Spain, where he has now stayed for about 6 years now, and claims the overall living in the Spanish capital is what has captivated him.

“I have two years left, and hopefully one more,” he said. “The club show me a lot of affection and I’d like to retire at Real Madrid. My family enjoy it and I want to keep enjoying this huge club.”

Modric, who beat Cristiano Ronaldo in second and Atletico Madrid star Antoine Griezmann in third place to the Ballon d’Or, went on to say: “This award is for all the players who probably deserved to win it and didn’t. It was a really special year for me. To win the Champions League and play in the final of the World Cup as captain was amazing and finish with this is… it is difficult for me to chose from those moments. I just want to enjoy it.”
