Last year, the world saw the rise of Shaili Singh, the young long jumper from India who made her country proud at the World U-20 Championships, clinching a silver medal. Now, the teenager has the upcoming Asian Games this year on her sights, but Shaili is managing the time between her training sessions training and online classes as she is also hopeful of cracking her boards.

Currently studying in Class X at St. Patrick School in Bengaluru, the year 2022 started off tough for Shaili Singh, as the 18-year-old had sustained COVID-19 last month while the third wave of the virus was spreading throughout the country. However, she made a stunning recovery from breathing difficulties.

Last year, Shaili had missed her classes as well as board exams while training for the World Championships, in which she made a wind assisted 6.59m jump to clinch the silver. This time, however, Shaili doesn’t want to miss the boards and is balancing her attendance in online classes as well as her ongoing training at the Sports Authority of India Center in Bengaluru, where she has resumed training since the last week of January.

“It’s tough, no doubt. I start my training early in the morning and then after lunch, I have to attend online classes for 2-3 hours. After that, I have to rush for evening session training,” Shaili told PTI, “In January, I contracted COVID-19 and had some breathing difficulties but recovered in little over a week’s time. I am fully fit now and have started training but yet to start jump training.”

“My coach (Anju Bobby George) told me study is also important. So, I’m going to take (board) examinations in March. I can’t miss online classes, I have to pass exam,” the teenager added.
