Bajrang Punia wins Gold Medal at the Asian Wrestling Championship in China

Indian wrestling superstar and world No. 1 Bajrang Punia handed India it’s first gold medal at the Asian Wrestling championship in Xi’an, China on Tuesday.

He won the gold medal in the men’s 65kg freestyle category by defeating Sayatbek Okassov of Kazakstan 12-7 in the final. The match however like his previous bouts wasn’t easy as the Kazakh wrestler was leading 5-2 in the first minute. He managed to keep Bajrang at bay with his defence and swift movement on the mat.

With 60-seconds remaining, the Kazakh was leading 7-2, but then the Indian valiantly wrestled back and went on a spree of 10 straight points to win the match 12-7.

In this championship, Punia has beaten Peyman Biabani of Iran, Charles Fern from Sri Lanka, Sirojiddin Khasanov of Uzbekistan, then finally beating Sayatbek of Kazakstan.
