Badminton Selection Trials: Aakarshi, Priyanshu shine in singles, Gayatri and Treesa prevail in women’s doubles

Aakarshi Kashyap and Priyanshu Rajawat clinched top spots in the women’s and men’s singles events while the pair of Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly achieved supremacy in the women’s doubles at the Badminton Selection Trials at the at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday.

Aakarshi remained unbeaten throughout the trials and in the women’s singles final, defeated Assamese shuttler Ashmita to bag her seventh victory in the tournament with a 21-10, 17-21, 21-15 finish. She will be seen competing alongside PV Sindhu at the upcoming Commonwealth Games later this year.

Priyanshu, meanwhile, prevailed over Kiran George to secure the men’s singles top spot. The 20-year-old from Madhya Pradesh, defeated his Keralite opponent  21-15, 18-21, 21-10.

The duo of Gayatri and Treesa, who made it to the semis of All England Open, carried on with their superb run this year with a victory over world no 20 pair of Ashwini Ponnappa Sikki Reddy, thrashing them 21-10 21-7 to clinch the women’s doubles top spot.

Ashwini, however, was able to secure the mixed doubles top spot along with B Sumeeth, defeating Ishaan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Crasto in a 59 minute and forth clash that ended in a 21-12, 17-21, 22-20 narrow win for the former duo.

The trials will let the shuttlers represent India for the upcoming Thomas & Uber Cup, set to take place from 8th to 15th May in Bangkok, as well as the subsequent Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingman from 28th July to 8th August and the Asian Games taking place in Hangzhou from 10th to 25th September.
