Indian shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth kicked off their respective campaigns in the Indonesia Open BWF World Tour Super 1000 tournament with wins to progress forward to the second round.
While Sindhu had a tricky outing, Srikanth eased past his opponent to book a spot in the second round. Sindhu was made to fight hard after she surrendered the first game to Japan’s Aya Ohori by the scoreline of 11-21.
The Olympic silver medallist then fought her way back into the tie winning the remaining two games 21-15 to knock out the Japanese and progress to the next round.
Kidambi Srikanth on the other hand had a contrasting outing when compared to Sindhu. The word No.9, ousted Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto 21-14, 21-13 in a match that lasted just 38 minutes.
In the doubles category, both the men’s team and the mixed doubles team brought joy to the nation by getting through to the next round. The pairing of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin 21-19 18-21 21-19 while Pranaav Jerry Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy edged past their opponents 25-23, 16-21, 21-19 in a closely contested match to advance further in the tournament.
However it was disappointment for the women’s doubles pair as the duo of Ashwini Ponnappa and N. Sikki Reddy suffered a shocking exit from the tournament after losing their opening match 20-22, 22-20, 20-22 to Malaysian pair of Vivian Hoo and Yap Cheng Wen.
