Babar Azam Eclipses Another Virat Kohli Record During Asia Cup 2023

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam has attained a feat during the Super Four opener against Bangladesh in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023 on September 6 at the Gaddafi Stadium.

The home side showcased an outstanding display, outplaying Shakib Al Hasan and Co. by seven wickets. It has been noted that Azam failed to make a big impact in the match because he was dismissed for a score of 17 runs off 22 deliveries. However, he achieved a remarkable feat, reaching the 2000-run mark as ODI captain in just 31 innings.

Azam became the fastest captain to reach this milestone, exceeding former India skipper Virat Kohli, who had achieved the feat in 36 innings. Moreover, the No. 1 ODI batter, who took over the captaincy in the 50-over format in 2019 is a stand-out performer in modern-day cricket.

At present, Babar Azam is the second-highest run-scorer of the ongoing continental championship, with 168 runs from three games at an average of 84. The 28-year-old showcased great batting skills in the tournament opener against Nepal as he tallied his 19th century in the 50-over format. He amassed 151 runs during the match steering his side to a convincing 238-run win.

Pakistan will be eyeing to rack wins in the upcoming big clashes in the Super Four stage. Pakistan will next face India at R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo on September 10. It will be a rematch between the arch-rivals as their Group A clash on September 2 was washed off due to rain.

After the match against India, the Men in Green will next square off against co-hosts Sri Lanka in their last game in the Super Four stage.
