Team India all-rounder Axar Patel became the fifth player to test positive for COVID-19. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, and Navdeep Saini have already been ruled out of the series.
The Indian players were tested upon arrival at Ahmedabad. Apart from the squad, three members of coaching staff, namely T Dilip (Fielding Coach), B Lokesh (Security Liaison Officer) and Rajeev Kumar (Massage Therapist) have also returned positive test results. As a result, the entire team is under isolation at the hotel.
The members of the contingent who are infected have been shifted to a different floor for quarantine.
“Every member was also asked to undergo an RT-PCR test at home before embarking on their journey to Ahmedabad and the travel was undertaken only after testing negative,” the BCCI stated yesterday
However, Patel, who is in the T20I squad rather than the ODI series had not joined the squad. This is the second time he has contracted the virus, after having tested positive once prior to the IPL 2021 season.
The all-rounder was last seen in the home series against New Zealand. He was not part of the squad for the South Africa tour due to injury.
The first ODI is in serious doubt after Team Inda canceled their training session today. The team was set to conduct their first session after a three-day quarantine after reaching Ahmedabad.
The three-match ODI series between India and West Indies was already approved to be played behind closed doors in Ahmedabad. There have been no positive cases in the West Indies camp so far and the Indian squad have a rather large contingent including the net bowlers.
