Avesh Khan shares his perspective on Dinesh Karthik’s controversial dismissal

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 Eliminator between the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) was marked by a controversial moment involving Dinesh Karthik. The incident occurred in the 15th over of the RCB innings when Avesh Khan was bowling.

Karthik, facing his first ball, was initially given out LBW off Avesh Khan’s delivery. The ball, a full and straight delivery that bent late, hit Karthik’s pads. After much deliberation, Karthik opted for the Decision Review System (DRS).

The review showed a significant spike on the UltraEdge, but it was challenging to determine whether the spike was due to the bat hitting the pad or the ball. The ball was also close to the bat. To the astonishment of many, including RR players Avesh Khan and Riyan Parag, the third umpire reversed the on-field decision, and Karthik was given not out.

This decision sparked outrage among many cricket enthusiasts and experts. RR Director of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara, expressed his dissatisfaction by approaching the umpires. Sreesanth, the former RR player, expressed his frustration on social media, questioning the qualifications of the third umpire.

Despite the controversy, Avesh Khan weighed in on the matter in a post-match press conference. He stated that every bowler would ask for a review in such a situation due to the high emotions involved. He admitted that he had some doubts when the incident was shown on the big screen but felt that the benefit of the doubt went to Karthik and believed that the umpires made the right decision.

“When you are bowling, emotions are quite high. At that time, every bowler would ask for a review. When it was shown on the big screen, I had some doubt. I think the benefit of the doubt went to DK bhai. The umpires took the right decision,” Avesh said in the post-match press conference.

Avesh Khan had a decent day with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 4-0-44-3. He took the wickets of Rajat Patidar, Mahipal Lomror, and Karthik as RR restricted RCB to 172 for 8. The Royals chased down the target in 19 overs to win the match by 4 wickets.
