Shooter Avani Lekhara secured a gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event. She equalled the world record of 249.6 points in the process of winning the event. This marks India’s fourth medal at the 2021 edition of the Paralympics.

The 19-year-old is now only the fourth athlete to win gold for India in the Paralympics. She had qualified for the finals of the event by finishing seventh in the qualification event with a score of 621.7.

She was in the running for a medal right from the start after shooting consistently above 10 points.

Cuiping Zhang from China won the silver medal while Ukraine’s Iryna Shchetnik won the bronze medal.

Athletes are allowed to either stand or be seated while shooting and are capable of holding the gun in the SH1 category, Impairments like amputations or paraplegia are common in such competitors.
