Daniel Vettori, Australia’s assistant coach, is likely to miss the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against India in Perth to attend the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This scheduling conflict arises as the Perth Test is set to begin on November 22, while the IPL auction is scheduled for November 24-25.
Vettori, who is also the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL, has a contract with Cricket Australia (CA) that allows him to participate in franchise leagues. Last year, he managed to juggle both roles, but this year’s overlapping events have created a tough decision for him.
Daniel Vettori to priotize IPL Auction
The clash between the Perth Test and the IPL auction has put Vettori in a difficult position. Cricket Australia has yet to decide whether he will stay with the team for the entire Test or leave early for the auction. This situation highlights the increasing influence of domestic T20 leagues on international cricket.

Vettori is not the only one facing this dilemma. Former Australian captains Ricky Ponting (head coach of Punjab Kings) and Justin Langer (head coach of Lucknow Super Giants) are also expected to attend the auction, potentially missing parts of the Perth Test.
