Tim Paine-led Australia suffered a disappointing loss in the Boxing Day test match against India at MCG. They have relinquished the lead in the series and the Aussie skipper has reflected on the team’s performance.
Tim Paine worries over sloppy and poor cricket
India were thumped by Australia in the previous test match when they were wrapped up for only 36 runs in the second innings, enabling the hosts to register a comfortable win at Adelaide.
However, the visitors made an incredible turnaround at MCG after winning the match by eight wickets. Following the defeat, Paine criticised their poor performance.
He said that the opponents forced them to make the mistakes which they did and it has cost them the match itself.
He further admitted that the opponents put pressure on them which has led to the disappointing outcome of the game.
Paine said: Pretty disappointed. We played some poor cricket, sloppy cricket for a major part of the game. Credit to India, they forced us into mistakes with the bat, ball and also on the field. And when you do that against a quality team, it costs you. But again, need to credit India as they put us under pressure.”
Australia were brilliant with the display of catching and fielding in the first Test but things looked different in Melbourne as they dropped at least half-a-dozen catches.
They had trouble with batting as well. The Aussie batters were wiped off for a total of 195 and 200 in the match and two big players – Marnus Labhuschagne and Steve Smith could not notch big scores. Opener Joe Burns saw low scores of a duck and 4 in the match.
He’ll get even better: Tim Paine on Chris Green
Paine lauded the youngster, Chris Green’s effort with the bat which compelled India to bat in the 2nd innings. He was at the crease for 36 overs with Pat Cummins.
Paine said: “We’ve seen the temperament that he (Green) showed and as he plays more games, he’ll get even better, which is exciting.”
The Border-Gavaskar Trophy test series is currently levelled at 1-1. The next test will commence in the new year from January 7 onwards at Sydney Cricket Ground.
