It shouldn’t be disputed by anybody if Neeraj Chopra is termed as the ‘Golden Boy’ of India. Teen Javelin sensation Neeraj Chopra on Monday won the gold medal at the eighteenth edition of Asian Games 2018.
The 20-year old from Haryana took India’s Gold tally to eight and also threw 83.46 meters off his first throw and that set the mark for a medal finish.
However, Chopra’s second throw was declined by the officials, but in his third attempt, he absolutely dwarfed other Javelin throwers with his monstrous 88.06m to win the gold medal and also create a new national record.
However, even though he won the gold medal, he failed to break the Asian Games record of 1.09m, but he beat his own national record of 87.43m, which he threw at the Diamond League Meeting in Doha earlier this year in May.
Chopra’s gold is only the second medal India has won in the javelin throw in Asian Games history after Gurtej Singh won bronze in 1982 in New Delhi.
Liu Qizhen of China was a distant second, with a best throw of 82.22m, while Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem won the bronze with an 80.75 effort. However, it’s worth noting that Neeraj was eligible to win gold with his first throw itself.
Speaking to Asian News International, Neeraj Chopra said:
“The competition was good, I had trained well and was focused on getting a gold medal for the country. I dedicate my medal to Atal Bihari Vajpayee ji who was a great man.”
The farmer’s son from Khandra village near Panipat, making a habit of harvesting gold! Wins men’s javelin throw at the Asian Games with a new NR of 88.06m. He is 6m clear of an outclassed field. Neeraj has now won gold in 2016 Jr World Championship, 2018 Commonwealth Games, 2018 Asian Games with Olympic games taking place in 2020, he is ready to script history.
Meanwhile, Twitter went absolutely bonkers and congratulation messages poured in from everywhere for the 20-year old.
