After a long wait of over one and a half decade, hockey is finally returning to Chennai as the city has been selected to be the host of the upcoming Men’s Hockey Asian Champions Trophy, commencing from 3rd August onwards.
The Tamil Nadu capital had its last Hockey tournament back in 2008 with the Asia Cup when India had defeated South Korea 7-2 in the final. Now, the Mayor Radhakrishnan Hockey Stadium will once again see the return of hockey, as Tamil Nadu youth welfare and sports development minister Udhayanidhi Stalin announced the news.
“It is with great pleasure that I announce Chennai as the host for the Asian Champions Trophy 2023. It is a matter of pride for Tamil Nadu to be hosting a prestigious international event after a gap of 16 years,” said Udhayanidhi.
“I believe hosting this tournament will further revive the sport in the region and watching top teams in Asia will also inspire the younger generation to take up hockey,” the minister added.
A total of six nations- India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, China, and Pakistan will participate in the event, which will run from the 3rd to the 12th of August.
