Ravichandran Ashwin, who departed the DC camp following a coronavirus crisis in his family, is slated to rejoin the franchise for the final leg of the competition. As of now, DC will play their final five matches at the Eden Gardens, but is subjected to change following the virus outbreak in the bubble.
The five matches comprising the final leg include Rajasthan Royals, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chennai Super Kings, and defending champions Mumbai Indians.
It is to be noted that the off-spinner will have to undergo the seven-day quarantine and return multiple negative tests to join the squad.
Following DC’s super-over win over SRH, Ashwin had announced that he would be taking a break from the IPL to be with his family.
“I would be taking a break from this year’s IPL from tomorrow, My family and extended family are putting up a fight against #COVID19 and I want to support them during these tough times.”
Ashwin’s wife Prithi Narayanan, later recounted the crisis faced by the family due to the virus, where, as far as 10 members tested positive.
“Feeling ok enough to croak a tiny hi to all of you. 6 adults and 4 children ended up testing+ the same week, with our kids being the vehicles of transmission – the core of my family, all down with the virus in different homes/hospitals. Nightmare of a week. 1 of 3 parents back home,” she had tweeted
Ashwin had a bleak start to the season, but still poses to be a vital asset for the last year’s finalists.
Despite his absence, the side have been able to cope up in the spin department largely due to the return of Axar Patel and youngster Lalit Yadav.
The BCCI now faces a serious conundrum regarding safety and scheduling. After the KKR camp was infiltrated by the virus, the same can be said for CSK as well. This has led to games being postponed of these two franchises, but to resolve this nightmare, the tournament might be put on hold by the BCCI.
