Veteran off-spinner R Ashwin admitted that he contemplated retirement for a brief time in 2018. The 35-year-old felt that people were not being sensitive enough to his injury and he was not backed.
Ashwin brought up the injuries he sustained in 2018 during the overseas tours as one of the biggest factors in his decision towards retirement. He had suffered a Grade 3 abdomen tear in the first Test at Adelaide. He opened about the phase where he strongly considered retirement. Speaking on The Cricket Monthly, Ashwin said:
“I contemplated retirement for a lot of reasons. I felt like people were not sensitive enough to my injuries. I felt like a lot of people were backed, why not me? I have done no less. I have won a lot of games for the team.
