R Ashwin admits he considered retirement in 2018

Ashwin brought up the injuries he sustained in 2018 during the overseas tours as one of the biggest factors in his decision towards retirement. He had suffered a Grade 3 abdomen tear in the first Test at Adelaide. He opened about the phase where he strongly considered retirement. Speaking on The Cricket Monthly, Ashwin said:

“I contemplated retirement for a lot of reasons. I felt like people were not sensitive enough to my injuries. I felt like a lot of people were backed, why not me? I have done no less. I have won a lot of games for the team.

“I don’t usually look for help, that somebody needs to back me, that somebody needs to cushion me or give me empathy. I felt I was not being able to be excellent and felt I needed a shoulder to lean on,”
Ashwin further revealed that he only had his wife for support during those testing times. He claimed that his father played a huge role in his decision to stay in the game, as he wanted to see a white-ball comeback from his son. The 35-year-old was shunned from the limited-over contest and the overseas Test matches with Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav’s combination growing strong.
However, when the pair’s glow faded, India turned back to Ashwin in the shorter formats as well. He made his white-ball comeback in the recently concluded T20 World Cup in the UAE. His strong performance in the tournament earned him a selection for the T20 home series against New Zealand as well. Ashwin added:
“Just after the England series in 2018, after Southampton, was one phase. Again, in Australia later that year where I tore my abdomen after the Adelaide Test, before and after Sydney. Many stages. The only person I would be talking to was my wife. But my father was hell-bent: you will make a comeback in white-ball cricket, and I will see that before I die,”
