In a significant endorsement, veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has voiced his support for the implementation of the Decision Review System (DRS) in domestic cricket. Ashwin believes that DRS is not only crucial for ensuring accurate decisions but also serves as a vital tool for young batters to refine their techniques before stepping onto the international stage.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently introduced DRS in the ongoing Duleep Trophy matches, marking a pivotal moment in domestic cricket. This move has been lauded by many, including Ashwin, who sees it as a step towards modernizing the game and providing young players with the necessary experience to handle the pressures of international cricket.
Ashwin highlights DRS’s importance in domestic cricket
Ashwin’s argument for DRS was highlighted during a recent Duleep Trophy match between India D and India C. India D batsman Ricky Bhui was given out leg before wicket (lbw) after a successful review by the bowling side. Bhui, who was batting fluently, was initially not given out by the on-field umpire. However, the DRS review showed that the ball would have hit the stumps, leading to his dismissal.
Ashwin pointed out that in the pre-DRS era, batters often got away with certain techniques that would now be deemed faulty. Bhui’s dismissal, according to Ashwin, is a classic example of how DRS can expose technical flaws that might otherwise go unnoticed in domestic cricket.
DRS for domestic cricket is not just for the right decisions to be made.
Ricky Bhuvi’s dismissal last evening against Manav Suthar is a classic case of a batter who will get away with this technique 10/10 times in FC cricket.

Calls for Wider Implementation
While DRS has been introduced in the Duleep Trophy, its use in domestic cricket is still limited. Ashwin and other cricketing figures have called for its broader implementation, particularly in high-stakes tournaments like the Ranji Trophy. Former India A and Bengal wicketkeeper-batter Shreevats Goswami echoed Ashwin’s sentiments, advocating for full DRS in all Ranji Trophy matches. “Incorrect decisions have impacted careers in the past. With DRS, players can perform with more freedom and confidence,” Goswami stated.
