Ashes 1st Test Day 3 Review: Malan-Root resurrection leaves Australia frustrated

The third day of the first Ashes Test resumed with Australia’s first innings. The hosts were bowled out for 425, giving them a mammoth lead of 278 runs. England turned up with a much better performance than their first innings display to reduce the lead to 58 runs with 8 wickets in hand as well.

Centurion Travis Head and Mitchell Starc started off the day’s play. Australia had the lead of 196 runs at the start of Day 3. The left-arm pacer was dismissed by Chris Woakes after a well-made 35. Mark Wood cleaned up the tail with the last wicket coming in form of Travis Head. The batsman scored a stellar 152 runs off just 148 deliveries.

With the pitch drying up, reducing the moisture, it became a much better surface for England to bat on the second time of reckoning. Rory Burns could not make amends for his first-innings duck as he was dismissed for 13 by Cummins in the 9th over.

Haseeb Hameed once again departed without converting his start. He was caught behind off Mitchell Starc after making 27.

At 61-2, England were in a little bit of trouble, with the mammoth lead to climb. However, Joe Root and Dawid Malan played out the remainder of the day to reduce the deficit to just 58 runs.

Root scripted history by scoring the most Runs by an English batsman in a calendar year. He scored 86 off 158 deliveries with 10 fours to his name. He had Malan by his side, who also kept the Australian attack at bay by scoring an unbeaten 80.

The duo have put on 159 runs for the third wicket, almost playing out 50 overs. Australia used 6 bowlers but to no avail. Nathan Lyon bowled the bulk of the overs with 24 against his name. At stumps on Day 3, England are poised at 220-2 after 70 overs.
