ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships: Sparsh Kumar Off To A Winning Start

Indian boxer Sparsh Kumar, competing at the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships, started the country’s campaign competition with a dominant win over Diushebaev Nurzhigit on Tuesday in Amman, Jordan.

In the 51 kg Round of 32 event, Sparsh defeated the Kyrgyzstani 5-0. Saken Bibossinov, the Olympic bronze medalist and reigning World Champion, will be his opponent in Wednesday’s pre-quarterfinal. He will be joined by Hussamuddin (57kg) in the pre-quarterfinals.

In the pre-quarterfinal bout later tonight, Lakshya Chahar (80kg) will take on Tajikistan’s Shabbos Negmatulloev.

Aside from Sparsh, Hussamuddin and Chahar, the rest male boxers competing in this event are: Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Ananta (54kg), Etash Khan (60kg), Amit Kumar (67kg), Sachin (71kg), Lakshya (80kg) and Kapil (86kg). As a result of their bye in round one, all of them earned their entries directly into the pre-quarterfinal round.

As for the quarter-finals, Govind Sahani (48kg), Sumit (75kg), Naveen (92kg), and Narender (92+kg) will be seen in action.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain will lead India’s challenge in the women’s boxing category against former world champion Valentina Khalzova of Kazakhstan in the quarterfinal on Saturday.

A total of eight other female boxers will participate in the competition from the quarterfinal stage, featuring Monika (48kg), Minakshi (52kg), Sakshi (54kg), Preeti (57kg), Parveen (63kg), Ankushita Boro (66kg), Pooja (70kg) and Savita (50kg). Meanwhile, the semifinals will feature Sweety (81kg) and Alfiya Pathan (+81kg).

In the previous edition of the Championships, India secured a total of 16 medals, their best finish at the event till date. This edition features a total of 267 boxers from 27 countries.
