In a heart-wrenching turn of events, India is set to lose a bronze medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games due to boxer Parveen Hooda’s suspension. The International Testing Agency (ITA) suspended Parveen for 22 months after a whereabouts failure. This suspension disqualifies her results obtained between December 11, 2022, and May 17, 2024.
The downfall of Parveen Hooda
Parveen had clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 57kg division at the Asian Games in Hangzhou last year. Her remarkable performance had also secured her a Paris Olympics quota place. However, the suspension shattered her dreams of competing at the Olympics. The ITA’s decision stripped her of both the Paris berth and the Asian Games bronze.
WADA suspends Parveen Hooda for whereabouts violation, set to miss Paris Olympics
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) tried to appeal on Parveen’s behalf, requesting that she not be stripped of her Asian Games medal. Unfortunately, their plea went unheard. Parveen’s suspension for three whereabouts failures—between April 2022 and March 2023—aligned with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules. Her ban will remain in force until July 16, 2025.
The ITA reports that the Indian boxer Parveen Hooda has been sanctioned with a 22-month period of ineligibility for a combination of three whereabouts failures within a twelve-month period.

India’s medal count at the Asian Games will now decrease from 107 to 106. However, this loss won’t affect the country’s impressive fourth-place finish at the multisport event.
BFI to compete for 57kg quota gain
As India lost the Paris Olympics quota place, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) fielded Commonwealth Games bronze medallist in 60kg, Jaismine Lamboria, in women’s 57kg category in the final Olympic qualifier, starting in Bangkok from Friday, in order to reclaim the quota place.
After Parveen’s suspension, India now has three Paris Olympics quota places in boxing won by Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg) and Nikhat Zareen (50kg).
