Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary Indian cricketer, has recently made a bold prediction about the future of Indian cricket. He has backed the young pacer Arshdeep Singh to play Test cricket soon, drawing parallels between him and the renowned Indian bowler, Jasprit Bumrah.

Arshdeep Singh’s spell against USA

Arshdeep Singh, a left-arm pacer, has been making waves in the cricketing world with his impressive performances. His recent spell of 4/9 in four overs against the USA in the 2024 T20 World Cup was nothing short of sensational. This performance earned him the Player of the Match award and caught the attention of cricket pundits worldwide.

Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports after the India-USA clash, praised Arshdeep’s ability to swing the ball both ways, a skill that is reminiscent of Jasprit Bumrah.

“He looked to bowl at hard lengths, looking to get the ball into the right-hander, and a little away for the left-handers. That’s been his strength, to be able to get both those deliveries on the spot and he wasn’t looking to bowl too many yorkers today, he was looking to bowl the hard lengths. And his temperament is fantastic,” Gavaskar said.

Gavaskar believes that Arshdeep, like Bumrah, can be a very good bowler in red-ball cricket. He urged the selection committee to consider Arshdeep as an option for the red-ball game. Given Arshdeep’s impressive first-class record with 49 wickets at an average of 31.97 in 16 outings, Gavaskar’s recommendation seems well-founded.

“I do believe that he, like, Bumrah can be a very, very good bowler in red-ball cricket as well. Because if he can move the white ball so well, just imagine what he can do with the red ball. So I think the selection committee would do very well to look at him as an option for the red-ball game as well,” concluded Gavaskar.

Arshdeep’s performance in the T20 World Cup has been instrumental in India’s success in the tournament. With seven wickets in three games at an average of 10.71 and an economy of 6.25, he has been India’s go-to bowler. His heroics against the USA helped India secure three consecutive wins and qualify for the Super 8 stage.
