Mesut Özil and Sead Kolašinac will miss this year’s EPL season opener against Newcastle United because of security reasons, as the duo have been facing several threats following the carjacking incident last month.
Two weeks ago back in July, Özil’s car was attacked by a group of masked in mopeds near a Turkish restaurant in Golders Green, with intentions to rob the 30 year old German midfielder. The Bosnian left back got out of the car and heroically fought off the knife wielding goons single handedly.
The players were reported to be unharmed after the horrifying attack. You can watch the clip below-

However, the Gunners duo have been under tension as reports of dubious activities near the players’ homes have come to light. The attackers are rumored to be behind this, and the families of the footballers are seriously frightened.
The club released a statement yesterday on the decision to leave out Özil and Kolašinac from starting at St. James’ Park. It reads the following:
“Mesut Özil and Sead Kolašinac will not be part of the squad for our opening match against Newcastle United following further security incidents which are being investigated by the police.”
“The welfare of our players and their families is always a top priority and we have taken this decision following discussion with the players and their representatives. We are liaising with the police and are providing the players and their families with ongoing support.
“We look forward to welcoming the players back to the squad as soon as possible. We will not be making any further comment on the matter.”
