Arsenal head coach Unai Emery has been looking to strengthen the Gunners’ leaky defence, and while injuries have rendered some options in the back helpless, the club turn their eye to the Eredivisie’s Ajax camp for reinforcements, where Nicolas Tagliafico has been impressing at the Dutch capital so far.

Tagliafico, 26, moved to Ajax in January earlier last year for a £4m fee from Argentina’s Primera Division side Independiente and vowed to stay in the Dutch capital until June 2022. The defender has impressed heavily since arriving at the Johan Cruijff Arena, most notably in Wednesday’s 4-0 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League. alongside scoring 5 goals as well as assisting 5 times in 31 appearances across all competitions.

While partner in the backline, Matthijs de Ligt, has been on the radar of many of Europe’s big guns including Barcelona, Tagliafico is said to be joining compatriot Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid in the summer, after Ajax became willing to sell the Argentina international for £8m come summer.

However, the La Liga side will now face competition for the Ajax fullback as Arsenal now join the battle for his signature, the Daily Mail report.

Emery’s men have been lacklustre defensively all season and the Spaniard will hope to solve the issue with the acquisition of Tagliafico after the present campaign ends.
