Arsenal legend Marc Overmars has been linked with an absolutely stunning return to his old club, and this time, in a role off the pitch. The former Gunners’ winger has been lined up for the role of director of football at the Emirates, and is reportedly the front runner in the race for the job.
Overmars, who was appointed as the director of football for Eredivisie side Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2012, has been lined up for the same position at Arsenal, according to reports. The 45-year old Dutchman has done a fantastic job in the Dutch capital so far, and the Gunners’ top hierarchy are hoping to call on their former player for much needed assistance in their post-Wenger era.
Despite the reports, Ajax have denied any approaches for Overmars, although he has been in touch with the club and former manager Arsene Wenger for a long time.
It is understood that Arsenal are considering AS Roma and former Sevilla director of football Monchi for the job as well, given his connections with present boss Unai Emery.
Arsenal’s head of football, Raul Sanllehi, is tasked for the search and, given his links with Overmars during the latter’s last season at Barcelona, and Overmars’ obvious links with Arsenal, the Dutch international appears to be the most eligible candidate for the job.
