England all-rounder Jofra Archer will reportedly not put his name for the upcoming IPL mega auction due to injury concerns. The 26-year-old is far from making a return to the cricket field after undergoing a second surgery on his elbow.
The right-arm fast bowler was not retained by his IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals due to his persistent injury issues. The franchise instead retained Sanju Samson, Yahsasvi Jaiswal, and Jos Buttler instead.
“We had to take a lot of factors into consideration while making this decision and would have ideally liked to have gone with four players but the uncertainty surrounding Jofra’s long term injury forced us to retain only three”, Rajasthan Royals’ Director Of Cricket, Kumar Sangakkara had said
Archer’s ongoing injury made him miss the home series against India, the T20 World Cup as well as the ongoing Ashes series. With the recently concluded surgery, he is set to be off the field for another 6 months which will make him unavailable for the West Indies series as well as the 2022 edition of the IPL. The ECB said in a statement:
‘The England and Wales Cricket Board can confirm that fast bowler Jofra Archer underwent a second operation on his injured right elbow on Saturday 11 December in London. The procedure addressed the long-standing stress fracture of his right elbow. A return to cricket will be determined in time, but Jofra will not be available for any of England’s remaining Winter series,’
Archer had initially gone under the knife to treat his elbow injury in May after the tour of India. He was optimistic about his recovery earlier this month when he spoke to Channel 7 regarding the same. The all-rounder believed that he was nearing the end of the road and is looking to return back to the field.
Rajasthan Royals had acquired Jofra Archer in the 2018 auction and was an instant hit. He played an instrumental role for the franchise over the course of the recent editions, primarily with the ball. His express pace and the control over his line and length along with proficiency in the death overs made him an invaluable asset.
