Anshu Malik, a rising star in Indian wrestling, recently competed in the Budapest Ranking Series, where she secured a silver medal in the 57kg category. This achievement marks another milestone in her career, demonstrating her potential on the international stage.

In the final, Anshu faced off against Kexin Hong, a 21-year-old Chinese wrestler. Despite her best efforts, Anshu could not match the skills of her opponent, losing the match 1-12 on points. This result, however, does not diminish her impressive performance throughout the tournament.

Anshu Malik’s performance in the tournament

Anshu’s journey to the final was marked by several notable victories. She started with an incredible bout against Anastasia Nichita of Moldova, winning 6-5 on points. With Nichita leading 5-4 and just 19 seconds remaining on the clock, Anshu scored a takedown on the edge to claim a 6-5 lead and win the close contest. She then overcame the challenge of world champion Zhang Qi, securing a 2-1 victory on points.

However, in the final, Hong proved too superior for Anshu. Taking a 4-1 lead in the opening round, Hong asserted her class in the second round, taking an unassailable lead with 11 seconds still remaining on the clock.

Despite the loss, Anshu’s performance in Budapest has been commendable. As a Paris Olympics 2024 quota holder for India, Anshu’s recent performance is a promising sign for her future prospects.

Anshu’s achievement in Budapest also highlights the growing prominence of Indian women wrestlers on the international stage. Alongside Anshu, Antim Panghal also secured a silver medal in the 53kg category.
